Professional Requirements



The Sepsis Coordinator is a health care professional who works in collaboration with the medical and hospital staff to provide multidisciplinary care to the septic patient. The Coordinator provides clinical professional expertise for patients, families and staff members. Scope of practice includes providing organized care to the patient with sepsis focus on health promotion and disease prevention. The Coordinator also functions as an educator and coordinates care in critical care/sepsis patient care management, ensuring optimal patient care management and outcomes. The Coordinator will collect and analyze data surrounding the sepsis patients to assist with documentation, coding, clinical care and outcomes. Facilitates development and refines protocol to become the standard of care within the facility, while providing and participating in quality improvement process. Applies excellent verbal and nonverbal skills to achieve excellence in patient experience. Collaborates with all members of the interdisciplinary team to achieve productive movement of the best practices within the organization.


  • Actively participate in quality improvement activities. Reviews EMR for real time extraction of process analysis and identification of improvement opportunities. Identifies, collects, enters, monitors and evaluates indicator that reflect the important aspects of care and service.  Develops and collaborates with other members of the healthcare team to implement changes to improve outcomes.
  • Serves as a clinical expert and resource, assisting in the care for complex and/or highly specialized patient care situations.
  • Coordinates the multidisciplinary committee from across the continuum; makes recommendations for process improvements with clinical processes.
  • Analyzes data and prepares reports; assists leadership in setting goals, identifying roadblocks, and in establishing milestones for project success.
  • Responds when appropriate to Code Sepsis calls for real time quality improvement observations and interventions.
  • Initiates and participates in case reviews for Sepsis patients.
  • Develops this new professional role. Remains current in literature and best practice.
  • Provides leadership for the sepsis program.
  • Collaborates with hospital educators to develop and implement sepsis focused education.
  • Ensures evidence-based protocols and therapies are the standard of care followed within the facility.
  • Collaborates with medical and clinical staff to provide multidisciplinary care to septic patients.
  • Collaborates with Quality Management to communicate real time feedback to clinicians regarding missing bundle elements and required documentation.
  • Collaborates with the nursing team to develop and implement plans of care including individualized teaching plans for patients and families.
  • Analyzes data trends to assist with documentation, coding, clinical care, and improved outcomes.
  • Participates in rounding on patients with identified sepsis and proactively responds to patient needs to improve patient outcomes and positively impact overall patient experience.




Minimum Education:

  • Three (3) years of recent critical care, and/or ED experience.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or related field or a combination of education and/or additional job related experience in lieu of the degree
  • Must have analytical skills for collecting and analyzing data.

Preferred Education:

  • Master’s degree in health related field preferred

Minimum Work Experience and Qualifications:

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Must be able to work in a union environment.

  • Current Los Angeles County Fire Card required (within 30 days of employment).

Salary range is based on years of experience: $41.16 - $66.00
